Button head wood screws are a type of specialized wooden self-tapping fastener, named for their rounded, low-profile head that resembles a clothing button. They are commonly used as exposed fasteners in residential woodworking and custom furniture assembly. Their core feature is the distinctive button-style head: it possesses a wide, flat base that provides ample load-bearing surface area, while the top surface features a smooth, gentle arc with no sharp edges. The low-profile design allows the screw to sit neatly against the wood surface without the need for pre-drilled countersunk holes, ensuring simple and efficient assembly.

Compared to countersunk or standard pan head wood screws, the button head distributes stress evenly, effectively preventing edge crumbling or surface indentation when fastening medium-density fiberboard (MDF), thin boards, or particleboard. It is well-suited for both engineered wood and solid wood substrates. The rounded head is resistant to impacts and will not snag clothing, offering an excellent balance of safety and aesthetics. The shank is standard-equipped with coarse wood threads and a sharp, self-tapping tip, which bites firmly into wood fibers to ensure a secure, long-lasting hold. These products are available in zinc-plated carbon steel or 304 stainless steel and come in various drive types, such as Phillips or Torx, to accommodate different needs. They are widely used in applications such as cabinet assembly, children's furniture, wood trim moldings, and outdoor preservative-treated wood construction, combining practicality, visual appeal, and durability.
